Such a beautiful and interesting place doesn’t need to be recommended to the tourist. Its forests, its rivers, its flowered fields and the wonderful shape of its mountains are a big attraction for the tourist. Then there is the charm of the medieval castles and of the towns rich in history and art.
This land will be valuable for those who honour the human spirit in its highest expressions because everywhere they can find traces of men like Francesco D’Assisi and Dante Alighieri.
The Casentino valley is 45 km away from Firenze.
Mount “Falterona” is its highest mountain where the river “Arno” has its source and runs for many kilometres passing through the valley. Dante Alighieri himself mentions in the “Divina Commedia” the river Arno and its many streamlets down in the valley.
In 1993 the National Park of “Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona and Campigna was established. It is a protected area including some of the largest and best preserved woods and forests in Italy. The two famous sanctuaries of Camaldoli and La Verna are situated inside the park.
